FCCS is the largest fruit and vegetable farmers’ cooperative in Malta. The FCCS has recently embarked on a research project, financed by the European Union (Rural Development Programme for Malta 2014-2020, co-financing rate 75% European Union Funds and 25% National Funds) to recycle manure nutrients for fertilising.
Through SYNECO, the FCCS will make the farmer a protagonist to help shape the future agricultural economic model. SYNECO will exploit the nutrients from the slurry and at the same time challenge climate and environmental issues more forcefully and directly
SYNECO is in line with the objectives of the Farmers’ Central Cooperative Society Ltd (FCCS) as it aims to enhance the quality of the agricultural produce that its members cultivate as well as to enhance the technical skills of the farmers in the application and management of fertilizer.

SYNECO poster exhibited at the Manure Source conference May 2022 in Hertogenbosch (The Netherlands), gathering experts in livestock manure from EU and beyond. The poster is telling about the specific challenges in Malta, and how the SYNECO project will tackle these.
Malta is designated as a Nitrates Vulnerable Zone, having a high nitrate level in ground and surface waters, and a high livestock density. On the other hand, Malta has a substantial net food import to supplement its own food production. Malta is the EU Member State with the highest population density, so the pressures on the land for farming are very significant.
Syneco participated in the Malta Agri Fair 2022. Crop Fertiliser Expert, Henning Lyngsø Foged held sessions explaining the CropManager Software throughout the fair.
Farmers showed interest in #CropManager and possibilities for using the nutrient tool to fertilise correct with manure-based fertilisers and reduce costs for mineral fertilisers.
